Creative Inventions

Our creative inventions class has enjoyed a MasterChef creative challenge and is now onto creating their own Sculpture by the Sea. To help with researching and selecting materials for the Sculpture by the Sea, we had a local engineer present on the importance of looking at the properties of materials when considering different projects.  He talked about the suitability of different materials for projects such as a giant axe, a heart valve mould, dolphin wishing well and a remote thermic lance tool. Students were able to feel the density of different materials (titanium, aluminium, stainless steel, bronze, different plastics). They discussed thermal conductivity, strength, cost, corrosion resistance and looked at some of the prototypes that had been constructed.
